something distinctive in our total offering

The word ‘distinctive’ reverberated in my brain this week, following the address by Prof. Medwin. We can clearly draw on the natural aesthetics of our positioning in an increasingly pretty city by the sea; with access to the calming and staggeringly beautiful Gower Peninsula and environs; and can aspire to offer a portfolio of innovative pedagogy; but I did ponder, due to the poor state of my tummy this week, whether there was an opportunity to tap into the connection of brain and body, or at least the effectiveness of one’s mind, and the link to the gut.

Reading an article today on ‘The Mind Unleashed’ http://themindunleashed.org/2015/09/why-and-how-your-state-of-mind-affects-your-gut-and-vice-versa.html has reopened up my own personal correlation between how well I eat, and my overall performance in the day. It led me on to think whether we [the UWTSD] could be more distinctive in our offering of caring for the ‘whole self’, and offering more healthier food options. I don’t eat well when I’m at work unless I well prepared the night before, and sometimes life is too hectic to do this. Possibly addressing what we offer on out campuses in terms of food and drink would also support our sustainability agenda. Anyway, just a passing thought…

I know Roger is pursuing this but it is a difficult one on our campus due the Franchise arrangement in place. However your thoughts may extend to 'physical literacy' which SHOE are championing. Perhaps we can integrate more physical exericise in to our classes and meetings? Just the idea of standing up more is a good start as you demonstrated in your session on our development day....

Felicity - could we try a learn and dine session with the CIPD intermediate group early in the New Year? Instead of a traditional classroom session, do a dine and learn event - e.g. each person brings in a dish that represents their background, people sit in groups of four and rotate to taste food and we set "dinner" topics for discussion each table? Needs some work, in terms of concept/organisaiton, but it could be a lot of fun!

Also @JayneWilliams and @JayneWoodman, could we experiment with this on the MBA course and invite some of the student support staff who attended the staff development event on the Friday - could be a good experiment, in terms of sharing culture and talking about cultural; change in organisations?

People say that you have to ...

People say that you have to " fall in love with the problem " in order to create innovative solutions; in my opinion, this is what we need to do with innovation in teaching, learning and assessment. As a sports coach, I made sure that my players were provided with a nutrition guide to ensure they were best-prepared for matches; why could this idea not transfer to an education setting. I know a lot of work has been done in this area, but do we have expertise within the University that could assist us in understanding links between nutrition and learning? I'm interested and my reaction to this is, why wouldn't we explore this area? Felcitiy, over to you :)
